<\/a>Tom Waits<\/p><\/div>Taken from Tom Waits’ 1999 album, \u201cMule Variations\u201d, which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, the song \u201cHold On\u201d, with lyrics by Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan, also got Waits nominated at the Grammys for \u201cBest Male Rock Vocal Performance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born in 1949, Tom Waits came from an ordinary middle-class Celtic-Norwegian family and became one of the most significant artists of our generation. In spite of limited radio and video support due to the abrasive nature of his music and lyrics, he continuously maintains a dominant presence in contemporary music and arts in general. Musically, he borrows from blues, jazz, vaudeville and even industrial music. Lyrically, Waits is a disciple of Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation and Dylan. His voice is a miraculous reincarnation of Howlin\u2019 Wolf, with a touch of Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins for good measure. <\/p>\n
Throughout his career, Waits has artistically reinvent himself and maintained his presence. Waits appeared in several films by Jim Jarmusch and collaborated with artists from many diverse disciplines.<\/p>\n
In March 2011, Waits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
